Media Project
For my media project, I was assigned to use a Sriracha bottle and incorporate using it in therapy with my client, Jane, who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. When I read that one of Jane’s main concerns post-ICU was having residual signs of distal weakness affecting mostly her fine motor skills, I knew what I was to do with my Sriracha bottle. I also learned that Jane loves to cook, make pottery, and tend to her garden. I knew that strengthening her upper extremities was crucial, so she could hold her cooking, pottery, and gardening utensils without the risk of dropping something when she gets to move back home. Since different sizes of Sriracha bottles exist, Jane can actually work with all different sizes in order to work on different grasps and holding different weights. Having Jane squeeze the Sriracha bottle in a specific pattern allows her to work slowly and carefully.
The most significant moment I had in working on this project was when it hit me how many ways a Sriracha bottle can be held and how many sizes of bottles there are. It is crazy that just a simple Sriracha bottle can allow so many opportunities for so much fine motor growth. This assignment has just proved to me how creative the field of OT is. I know in my future practice I might some days be low on a variety of resources, but this project has shown me that if I just take a moment to think, I can always come up with something. This project has also reminded me to always look at what is important to my client, because even if my client doesn’t like Sriracha, they can still draw a picture of something that is meaningful to them. In the future, I will always remember my Sriracha bottle project and the freedom that the most seemingly insignificant resources allow.
